Ran into this woman playing a Pipa, or the Chinese style lute, in a coffee shop in Beijing, way back at the beginning of our trip. Thought I’d throw it up as a weekend post:

I don’t think that could be called a Sitar.
That’s a Chinese Pipa which is an intrument that definitely came thru the silk road. It may even has a common ancestor as the present day Sitar. But it would be inaccurate to call it a Sitar. As it passes from China to Japan, it’s known as biwa.
Thanks for the correction. You’re right, I was looking for the general term that can be used to describe that category of instruments, since I did not want to use the Chinese term. I’ve corrected that now, mentioning the Chinese term in the body, and calling it a Chinese lute. Thanks.
